In plants, the light reactions produce ATP, which is used by the Calvin (C3) cycle to produce sugar. The sugar may then be catabolized in the mitochondria to produce ATP for the plant's energy needs. Why do plants go to the trouble of the Calvin cycle instead of just using the ATP produced by the light reactions for their energy needs?
