The answer is contact metamorphism. Quartzite is formed from sandstone which is usually grey or white in color while quartzites range in shades of pink to red depending on the amount of iron oxide in the stone. Other colors are brought about by other minerals present in the rock. The sandstone is usually a sedimentary rock but after the metamorphism the structure is different and the layers cannot be discticitve.
