How is the South different from other regions of the United States?

It doesn't differ that much.  

The population density is much lower than in the Northeast. There are huge cities like Atlanta and Houston which have a typical American vibe. Of course, you'll notice the various Southern accents.  

There are liberals, intellectuals and artists living everywhere. A couple of states have Indian immigrants as (right-wing) governors. Of course, there are a lot of white conservatives, but a diligent French TV crew can find them in California too.
