What would happen if Thomas Jefferson decides not to purchase Louisiana territory

The answer to this question can vary, but, if Thomas Jefferson had not decided to buy the Louisiana Territory, it would've been a lot harder for the U.S to gain more land through imperialism. Additionally, that land would've been subject to another nation and they could've used that land to their advantage.
