Respiratory quotient is calculated as the fraction of the concentration or amount of carbon dioxide released to the amount or concentration of oxygen consumed or utilized.

RQ shows the amount of carbohydrate, fat or protein involved for the metabolic use in the body. Respiratory quotient in living organism even in smaller organisms are measured by an instrument called as respirometer.
