The answer would be a metaphor as a metaphor is written to make the image stronger in the readers head when they read a story. For example "The more I thought about my problems the more I continued to drown in a sea of grief and depression." 
A metaphor is a figure of speech that is a word or phrase applied to an action and/or object to which should not be taken literally.
