Some 3,000 American soldiers died during the Spanish-American War of 1898. Most of them did not die in battle but they died because of diseases.

Yellow fever and typhoid killed many men (whole units in some cases) . The spread of  those illnesses was helped by the hot, tropical conditions in the Caribbean and in the Southeastern part of the United States. The Spanish forces were also decimated by them.
