When a monosaccharide is treated with H2 / Pd, the carbonyl group undergoes reduction to form the corresponding alcohol and when the monosaccharide is treated with Benedict's reagent, the carbonyl carbon undergoes oxidation i.e. CHO group oxidizes to COOH.
