The Europeans basically invaded and stole land from the native for these reasons. They took control over the government in parts of America and Africa. The British specifically tried to make parts of America mercantilism states and get gold. The Spanish wanted all 3, trying to force the native to change religions. The French wanted to make trading post and convert natives to Catholicism. All of this comes back to Europeans wanting power and control.
