Elizabeth Keckly and Frederick Douglas are both former slaves who became civil rights activists. However, Keckly resided in Washington, D.C. for most of her life while Douglas did most of his abolitionist work in Massachussetts and New York. Keckly founded the Contraband Relief Association and Douglas founded his own newspaper: the North Star.
