say that x is the larger and y is the smaller

x-3=2y

so we can combine the equations and solve for x and y

re-arrange x-3=2y to be x=2y+3

x+y=36

3y+3=36

y=11

now insert that back into x+y=36

11+x=36

x=25

Out of the two numbers x and y, 11 is the smaller number
