Answer:

[7 - (-2)]2 + [-1 - 4)2 = 92 + 52 = 106

The distance is 1061/2 = 10.3 (correct to 1 decimal place).

I usually use my calculator to do square root, but you could do it by Newton's method, starting with 10.
