4 The temperature in Stockton was 83°F. The temperature in New York was –5°F. How much hotter was the temperature in Stockton?

Answer:

It was 88°F hotter in Stockton.

If it was 0°F in New York, Stockton would have been greater by 83°F; as it is -5, add 5 to 83.
As the problem is subtraction, negative.
If the quantity is in negative, like -5, -7, -120; you have to add.
