Why was japan influenced by its closeness to china?

Well, when Chinese first made contact with Japan, the Japanese did not know very much. The Chinese had writing, technology and knowledge that they shared with Japan, causing the influence. There was no other civilization in the vicinity which could challenge China at the time, making the closeness significant.
