How did the demand for cotton help shape the economy for the south?

Cotton is the main reason why the economy rose at that time in the south. Since cotton was such a desirable item that many people wanted, it grew in value and because of supply and demand, it became a staple crop for many farmers. Slaves and lower class men got jobs, inventions like the cotton gin were invented. The economy grew since there was so much profit that was gained from it.
