If you made one of the multiplicands on the left equal zero it could not be equal to 14, so you must get that 14 into the equation...first expand left side using multiplication...

x^2+x-6=14  subtract 14 from both sides

x^2+x-20=0  now we can factor...

x^2+5x-4x-20=0

x(x+5)-4(x+5)=0

(x-4)(x+5)=0

So x=-5 and 4,  answer C.
