Slope is defined as the change in y over the change in x:
[tex]m = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}[/tex]

In the picture below, they have plotted two points that are on the line. We can use those two points in the slope formula.

[tex]\frac{7 - (-3)}{3 - (-2)} = \frac{10}{5} = 2[/tex]

The slope is 2 or [tex]\frac{2}{1}[/tex]. For every 2 points you move the Y direction, you move 1 once in the X direction.
