This was the westernmost area of the US in which settlement by pioneers and explorers ended. This area constantly shifted and was considered to be ended by approximately 1890, as per the US census. Manifest Destiny was the concept that stated that settlers should continue to move westward and settle these lands, irrespective of those who were already owning or living on them.
