Despite the bad things Stalin has done, he was an actual great leader, both government-wise and military-wise. His charisma was outstanding as well.

Joseph Stalin is important to history because during 1929-1953 he was the dictator of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).  Under Stalin, the Soviet Union was transformed from a peasant society into an industrial and military superpower. Hope this helps!:)
