The word turkey is said to come from the Hebrew word "tukki" which means peacock. The genus name for turkey is meleagris meaning guinea fowl. The turkey has always been mistaken either as the peafowl that comes from Asia or that guinea fowl from Africa. Many believe that the name "turkey" is taken from the turkey's call that is "turk, turk, turk". Even until the 18th century, the debate on how the name of turkey come into being still continues. There has been a lot of presentations on how this name is derived up until now.
