How did the federal government change after the Civil War?

After the Civil War with the victory of the Union, it made the federal government stronger. It was possible to pass the Fourteenth Amendment which limits states power and protects the rights of citizens. With this, the federal government took a central place in the defense of individual rights.

Also, because of the end of slavery, the southern states needed help to change their economy - that was slave-based - so the reconstruction began transforming this state’s economy.
