Degeneration of the dopamine-releasing neurons of the midbrain (substantia nigra) is the ultimate cause of Parkinson's disease.  

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease which includes the unknown cause of death of dopaminergic neurons in the pars compacta of the substantia nigra.
